How to Spot a Fake Pokémon Card: A Quick Checklist for Collectors
As Pokémon TCG prices have climbed, so has the number of counterfeit cards in circulation. Most fakes are easy to catch once you know what to look for. Run through this checklist before you buy a single card or trade with someone new.
1. Check the print quality
Genuine cards have sharp, evenly printed text and crisp artwork. Fakes often show blurry lettering, washed-out colours or a slightly off font. Compare the card against a known genuine copy from the same set if you can.
2. Look at the back
The blue on the reverse of a real Pokémon card is a specific, consistent shade with a clear swirl pattern. Counterfeits are frequently too light, too purple or have a fuzzy Poké Ball graphic.
3. Do the light test
Hold the card up to a bright light. Real cards have a thin black layer between the front and back that blocks most light. If the card glows through easily, be suspicious.
4. Feel the card stock
Genuine cards have a slight texture and a firm snap when flexed gently. Fakes often feel glossy, thin or unusually stiff. Holo and full-art cards should have a textured surface, not a flat shiny film.
5. Verify the set details
Check the set symbol, card number and rarity symbol against an online database. Fakes regularly get these details wrong, or list a card number that does not exist in that set.
Buy sealed from a trusted shop
The simplest protection is to buy sealed product from a retailer you trust. Every booster box, Elite Trainer Box and collection we sell is sourced from official distribution, so what you open is exactly what it says on the box.
